The Upward Bound program at the University of Colorado Denver, a federally funded TRIO program, is an educational pre-college program for selected students from Sheridan and Jefferson High Schools. Upward Bound’s mission is to prepare and help motivate students with potential for success in post-secondary education.
Who can participate?
An individual in the 9th-11th grade is eligible to apply for the Upward Bound Power-Up if the student is:
v First-generation college student- neither parent has earned a Bachelor’s degree
v Low Income designated by the federal income guidelines
v Willing to make a long-term commitment and
v Have a valid Social Security Number
How does Upward Bound Power-Up work?
During the school year, Upward Bound Power-Up provides:
v Regular academic, personal, and college-preparation advising for students at their high school, to help students set and reach their goals
v Instructional and tutorial sessions after school to help improve skills and performance in class as well as a Saturday Academy once a month at the University of Colorado Denver
v Educational and cultural events and college visits to enrich student’s experience and knowledge
v A stipend for full effort and participation in Upward Bound Power-Up
v Assistance in securing admission and financial aid for college
During the Summer Program, Upward Bound Power-Up provides:
v A six-week intensive, academic program on the campus of the University of Colorado Denver
v Individualized instruction through classes in Mathematics, English, Reading and College Preparation
v Recreational, cultural and personal enrichment activities
v High quality instructional and supervisory personnel
v A stipend for full effort and participation in the program
Expectations:
v Attendance to all Upward Bound Events/Tutoring/Homework Assistance is Mandatory
v Students are allowed one excused absence from a Saturday Academy/Field Trip with prior parent(s)/guardian(s) notification
v All waivers need to be completed and turned in for student participation
***Upward Bound Power-Up is a free program. There is no financial obligation for families.
